sorry, i lied

How to do the "I'm so sorry" trend

The "I'm so sorry" trend (also called "sorry I lied") is a TikTok photo post where the first slide is a too-good-to-be-true version of a real photo, and every slide after it takes one lie back, until the last slide shows the real, untouched photo. People do it with childhood Halloween costumes, baby photos, yearbook photos, and postpartum photos.

Here’s the format, the sound, and two ways to make it: the CapCut way and the one-upload way with the I'm so sorry trend app.

The format (what the good ones have in common)

  1. Slide 1 is the lie. An AI-perfected version of your photo: the costume is store-bought, the hair is long, the baby has a full head of hair.
  2. Each slide after that undoes one lie. "okay… I lied, I had braces." "K I lied again, my hair wasn’t that long." One change per slide, so people can play spot-the-difference.
  3. The last slide is the real photo. No filter. The worse it looks, the better the post does.
  4. 4 to 7 slides total. The 2.3M-like yearbook one has 7. Two-slide versions exist but they’re mostly from compilation accounts.
  5. White TikTok captions, centered, lowercase, a little dramatic. "I’m so sorry", "forgive me 😭", "I’m so freaking sorry".
  6. Photo mode, not video. Most of the originals are TikTok photo posts you swipe through, with the trend sound on top.

Real caption patterns

  • "This is me as a baby" → "Sorry I had darker hair" → "Sorry it was straight" → "Sorry it was shorter" → "even shorter" → "IM SO SORRY"
  • "My sister and I in the 90s. Pretty angel and cute devil" → "Wait, we had on pajamas. Not dresses" → "And our hair was a little messy" → "I’m so sorry"
  • "Me after my very unplanned C-section" → "I actually was wearing glasses" → "a hospital gown" → "I’m so sorry"

Which sound

The one most of the big posts use is Freya Wilmot’s original sound. Search "im so sorry" in TikTok sounds or tap the sound on any post in the trend. More about the sound →

Way 1: the CapCut template

  1. Open CapCut, search "I'm so sorry" or "sorry I lied" in templates.
  2. Pick a template, add your photo. The template’s AI makes the "perfect" version for you.
  3. Export, then post to TikTok with the sound.

What’s good: free, quick. What’s not: you don’t choose what the AI changes, most templates only give you 2 slides, and you write all the captions yourself.

Way 2: one upload, every slide

  1. Go to the I'm so sorry trend app and upload one photo.
  2. Type your lies. "My hair was blonde." "I had a real princess dress." Up to 5. Put the biggest lie last.
  3. Wait about 2 minutes. You get the perfect version, one slide per lie taken back, and your original as the last slide, captions already written.
  4. Tap Save to Photos, open TikTok, make a photo post, add the sound.

Ideas by photo

  • Halloween costume: homemade costumes, face paint, the mask that didn’t fit. Costume ideas →
  • Baby photo: bald, squinting, in a bowl. Baby photo ideas →
  • Yearbook / school photo: braces, the haircut, the shirt your mom picked.
  • Postpartum: the hospital gown version.

Tips so it actually lands

  • One lie per slide. Don’t undo three things at once.
  • Keep the real photo rough. Don’t filter it.
  • Caption the last slide with just the apology.
  • If you’re using your kid’s photo, keep it to your own kid.

FAQ

How many slides should it have?

4 to 7. Perfect version, then one per lie, then the real one.

Do I need CapCut?

No. CapCut is one way; uploading one photo here is the other.

Can I do it with a video instead of photos?

You can post the MP4, but the trend is mostly photo-mode posts with the sound added in TikTok.

Why does the AI version look a bit different from me?

Image models keep the face and pose but can drift on small details. The ones that work best give the AI a clear, front-facing photo.
